It was a full, busy exciting weekend, full of egg hunts and projects and spring celebrations with friends and family.
But most exciting of all was the farm trip to collect our new...
Piggies!
They are so much fun and we are enjoying having them with us so much. We are spending a lot of time just watching them- who needs TV when you have piglets to entertain you?
We were not expecting to have to take them so early, but it has all worked out. And it turns out they love boiled eggs more than anything in the world, so easter is a good time to have them arrive! They have already learned to come running to us when we come close, hoping for a egg snack, which may just come in handy when we need to move them. And Ari is so excited to bring them their egg treats every day. "Now we are real farmers, mama," he says with glee.
I hope you all had weekends full of adventures!
I remember saying the same thing when we got our hens (about no need for TV... we still don't watch TV now that we are not farmers anymore, mind you). The girls could spend hours sitting in the yard and playing with and watching the chickens.

Right now I want to say -do it, get piggies! but maybe I should wait to give advice on pigs until we've been through a whole season with them- so we'll talk again in november! And yes, he is so very kissable, sometimes it is hard to just let him play when I just want to snuggle him up!

Jules- no names, just "girl pig" and "boy pig" and we might just keep it that way on the advice of other farmers raising animals for meat. We had lovely weather this weekend- it is a bit cooler today, but still melting out there- hurrah!

Those little piggies are insanely adorable! I concur with the advice you've already received - don't name your meat animals! My kids refuse to eat the chickens that were named.
ReplyDeletewhat a wonderful addition to your farmstead...wow! i have a few sets of friends who have had pigs and they seem to bring adventures for sure. any new project does though. the learning they went through was incredible and one family is game to do it again. tricky to know about naming them hey? we have named our birds, and plan to do so again here, even though two roo chicks will go to freezer camp by june.
ReplyDeletewe don't watch TV either, but we have 8 adorable 3 week old chicks next to me in their fridge box brooder trilling and cheeping right now. in the am me and the boys just sit on our chairs and giggle and stare at them. i love giving this to my boys, so many local farms near me are very old school (don't name them, don't learn how to care for them when ill, slaughter when ill instead, don't get attached, don't let kids touch them etc) personally i think it's great to attach, we are all connected and it's inauthentic to pretend that we aren't. that said attachment varies for everyone and you know your family best. some children may find it impossible to face the slaughter day if too attached? but i do think more people need to know more about livestock, and their animal sources of food. and kids will inherit tis earth...

Erin, I know, it is complicated isn't it? My kids are already in love with the piggies, they don't need to have names for that, but this is very new for us- having the kids involved in raising animals for meat. We will see how it all goes, but I certainly agree that the attachment is an important part of this process which will allow us to raise these amazing creatures with love and care.
