walking boots

Another lovely friday with my little one. He was really keen to get outside and brought me his boots to make it perfectly clear. The first time I put these boots on him he howled and kicked them off, so he's just been wearing slippers and socks and staying in the Ergo for our walks. But the other day I put the boots on him, this time making a big show of it, telling him how nice and fancy those big kid boots were and he went with it. And once he realized that it meant he could walk around in the snow just like a big kid, there was no turning back.

He happily toddles about, walking through the deepest snow and up the steepest banks, asking cheerily for help when he falls. Today he headed straight for the chicken and llama pens, where he would happily spend his days. We watched the animals for a long time. He practiced his rooster crows and said "hi llama!" ("ni nama!") over and over. Once he'd had enough (or I had anyway!) I put him in the backpack and headed out on a walk through the woods. He craned his head back to watch the treetops and fell asleep like that, face up towards the sky. Oh how I love this baby.

a marble day

:: family watching the marbles from their "up high bridge"::

:: the "big scene"::

My mom took Dori this morning for a couple hours (much to his excitement- he loooves my mom,) and Ari and I had play time together. He wanted for us to build a marble run together, something that is near impossible with a toddler around, and so we went straight to it as soon as the baby departed. Much complicated construction ensued- a viewing bridge and a roadway and a complex marble run with his new "hilly track" he got from Nana and Grandpa for Christmas. He was totally in the zone and played with it long after I had retreated to my knitting.

We were needing some time together today, the past few days have been a bit tough, with lots of conflicts and butting of heads. After such string of lovely days- weeks even- it was kind of a shocker, reminding me of how it was during the twos and also reminding me of how good things have been of late.

Some hang out time was just what we needed. After marble run building there was lots of book reading and kitchen projects and playing of "mama and baby otter"- a game that mostly involves snuggling together, but with some imaginary eating of fish and clams (you have to crack the clam on a rock and toss away the shell, just so you know,) to make things exciting. I love this boy so very much. And these tough days really have been the exception, mostly I think three-and-a-half is pretty darn spectacular. And being able to join this sweet boy in his world of magic and adventure is such an amazing thing. I love you my baby otter.

portraits

This is Ari's first drawing of our family, drawn on family art night last week. Left to right is Dori (with the hair just growing in!) Papa, Me and Ari, in case you couldn't tell. I love it a awful lot even if I am the shortest- shorter even than Dorian. Don't tell me what that means. I don't want to know.
This was the first representation of people, but monsters have been around for awhile now. And when Ari was asked what he wanted to make his brother for his solstice gift he said "a soft monster." So soft monster it was. Two in fact.

I had him draw out some designs on paper first, and then gave him a fabric pen and some white cotton and he drew out his monsters. The one on the left there has lips, tongue spiky hair and lots of sharp claws on his hands and feet. The one on the right has lots of legs and eyebrows and an eyebrow over its nose as well. He chose the backing fabric, red of course- solid and polka dots. A fun quick project that he was really proud of. And they are coming in handy as doll pillows too. The dolls haven't complained yet about having to sleep on all those claws and things.

celebrating

We celebrated my birthday this weekend, though it is not actually until tomorrow. 32! Ari asked if I was 61, and then told people on the phone that I was thirty-one-one-two. There was lots of loveliness this weekend. A lovely sunny solo walk (well, with a sleeping baby on my back, but it was peaceful and lovely,) birthday pancakes for breakfast, supper made by my boys, and this amazing rich date cake for dessert. Ari and Perry dyed some wool for me, a crazy bright colour combo that will be fun to find a project for. I'll post pics of my treasures sometime soon.

We all went out to a family folk dance at a local community hall on Saturday which was such good fun. Most of the musicians are kids, much to Ari's delight and there is amazing mix of teens and little kids and old folks. Ari and I danced a square dance together and he did so well, following along even when it meant dancing away from me for a bit, and then when our lines met up and we were together he was so happy to see me and giddy and jumping up and down doing his own little dance moves to the fiddle music. So fun.

I also went out on my own to a show last night- Perry put the kids to bed on his own, which is a bit of an adventure, but it was quite a treat to go out and watch some good music.

And now I am off to go pull out my binder with all my important organizing-myself-and-my family papers because we have fallen off the rhythm wagon pretty badly and are paying for it in bedtime resistance and general crankiness. I guess it is good to slip a bit to be reminded how much it matters that I keep us moving through the days in a rhythmic way. A birthday is as good a time as any to get back into the groove.
And here is a green smoothie picture just because it makes me smile, and though this isn't from today, the scene is quite similar on most days, though sometimes the face is purple or pink, but regardless it is always enjoyed to this delicious degree!

beebee baby

I think I will continue with the small wonders project for a bit- I am finding it a helpful exercise, and appropriate for where I am at right now. But I am going to pop in some catch-up posts too that are backed up from the holiday season. Mostly it is the handmade solstice gifts that I really would like to record. This one is Dorian's gift from me. I had big plans of having a doll like Ari's Sammy, with all the trimmings- clothes, sweater, full head of hair- maybe a set of PJ's to match the ones I was going to make the boys. I also had two other doll commissions and had hoped to make another doll for the preschool. What we got was this little sweater dolly.

The pattern is from the winter 09 issue of living crafts and came at the time when I was beginning to realize I was in way over my head with my doll making and general gift making plans. I was able to sew up this one and one other- for our dear friend's little boy, make up for the fact that there wouldn't be a dress up doll for him either- over a couple days, with lots of hand sewing while the kids were playing around me which fits into my life so much easier than extended sessions at sewing machine these days.

It isn't a Sammy-doll but this little dolly is just fine. It is snugly and soft and a much more appropriate size for a toddler. I am happy with how it turned out and tucking it in each night beside my baby feels just as good as if it were the more elaborate doll I had hope to make. It is mama made and full of love and that is what matters. He'll get that dress up doll someday (and maybe some PJ's too...) but for now he loves his little "BeeBee."

you be the hippo

Inside making forts. The boys are playing so well together these past few weeks. I have been taking videos and showing Perry in the evening as proof of the sweetness. And the imagination of a 3-and-a-half year old is just the best thing. Here Ari was working in his garden- picking the rhubarb and hoeing the soil- with his friend the hippo. Taking breaks to read books to his baby. And Dori was so thrilled to be included, he didn't mind having to be the hippo at all.

music man

This boy loves his music. This ukulele is what Santa brought him this year and he plays it everyday, making up spontaneous lyrics and singing his heart out. I love it ever so much.

getting out

It is melty warm here- I can hear the rain on the roof as I write this. We have been getting outside every day (though this weekend was an exception, with water issues to solve and we payed the price with squirrely kidlets!) and it is so key to keeping us happy and healthy- a fact I have to remind myself as I coax and cajole my children into long underwear and sweaters and snowsuits and mittens.

Today was a lovely walk, the snow melting from the trees, the sun slanting through, the squirrels out to entertain us with their tree jumping and cheekiness. Dori fell asleep again in the Ergo and I laid him down in the bed and went back out to build a snowman with Ari, checking in periodically to make sure he wasn't overheating in his snowsuit. Ari is in love with snowmen right now. The Snowman movie I mentioned is a big reason- it really is a magic one if you are looking for a sweet, short gentle film for young ones. Though it is a bit sad at the end when the snowman melts. Ari nowturns it off just before this scene and to keep his image of the friendly snowman alive in his mind.

Which is what he was thinking when he built this one. "I'm going to build a jolly snowman, Mama. At night it will come alive and we can fly together!" But he was happy to veer away from the movie plot with this sculpture- this is a snowmama, who is carrying two babies on her back. She does looks pretty jolly. I wonder what sort of adventures she will take my little dreamer on tonight?

waterlogged

This morning I woke to the words "Mama! The water is spraying all over!"

A pipe we didn't even know we had burst in our back room. Luckily we only keep recycling and such back there. Perry spent the day in our "crawl space" - in quotation marks because crawling is impossible. He has to slide around on his back with insulation and pipes dangling down in his face, the passage is so narrow. The poor fellow is miserable and it still isn't fixed. So we are without water and wondering if we can find a really skinny plumber who is willing to shimmy around under our wet house.

And yet, the day had its sweet spots as it always does. I made this terrific soup for supper with plenty more for tomorrow. I let Ari watch a movie and was able to sit and watch The Snowman with him for a bit, snuggled up together. Dori heard me say the word "gentle" and toddled over to pat my face softly.

Even when the pipes burst I know my life is blessed.

time together

I've had some one-on-one time with both of my kids in the past couple days. It is so precious to be able really focus on each of them for a short while. Dori and I played with the silks and dress ups. We read and sang songs and danced and read books and more books while his brother was off skiing and playing with his grandparents.
And yesterday Dori went down early for his nap and stayed asleep longer than usual so Ari and I had some extra time for snuggles and more book reading together. We spent a lot of time looking at his "quiet time book." I've been wanting to share this terrific book here since we got it awhile ago. It is called "In the Town all Year Round" and it is such a good one. It is a wordless book that follows dozens of characters through the seasons. There is so much to see on each page, but the images and themes are gentle and sweet- a kindergarten is built, a baby is born, children prepare for a lantern festival. It works really well as a quiet time book- Ari will spend ages pouring over the pages on his own. And it makes for a lovely mama-kid-time book too.

reading together

Reading with my boys. I love the moments of snuggling up and sharing together in a book, the feeling of those little bodies relaxed in my lap, totally engaged in the story or pictures. Lately Ari has been "reading" to himself a lot, flipping through the pages, often while singing made up songs to himself. I think the sound of a contented child singing to himself might be one of the sweetest sounds in the world. And speaking of sweetness, a baby that snuggles all the pictures of babies in the books you are reading? That is right up there on the sweetness metre.

The way he follows you around with a book until you sit down with him (even before you get out of your PJ's,) and then backs up to plunk himself on your lap is also pretty great. I love these little bibliophiles of mine.

it makes you feel good

when you clean your room and make the bed,
when you clear the mean thoughts from your head,
when you follow through on what you said,
it makes you feel good.
when you do the dishes in the sink,
when you give me something sweet to think,
when you dip into your heart and drink,
it makes you feel good.
-Renee and Jeremy

I discovered Renee and Jeremy's first album when I was pregnant with Dori and their sweet lullabies have become standbys in our home. I can't listen to them without getting teary (in a good way.) Their new album arrived today and it is so lovely. We danced and smiled and I hugged my kids extra tight. And got a bit teary of course. Thank you Renee and Jeremy for creating the most life-affirming, joy-filled, real kids music I've heard.

paperwhites and other wonders

::the paperwhites are blooming::

I started this blog as a reminder to myself. To slow down, breathe deep, notice the beauty in my days -the small precious moments in my home, on our land, with my family. And I need to concentrate on these things especially now, as it is these moments that are carrying me. And so I will begin a little project here, posting the treasured, shining moments. The small wonders. I expect there will be few words, but at least one moment that made me catch my breath and helped me keep my heart open. Feel free to join in.
